One thing Bill and I had in common was our love for big band music. Years ago Bill asked me to order a CD set of Jackie Gleason's band, something I wasn't sure I would care for. I remembered some of this from reruns of the Jackie Gleason show, but didn't quite remember the music itself. But I liked it, and more importantly Bill loved this stuff and remembered the names of some of the lead players and soloists in the band. After Bill could no longer drive, a few times Bill and I stayed in the car while my mother shopped for groceries. I'd run internet radio over my cell phone and we'd listen to 30's and 40's big band music, especially dance bands deep in the swing era. He knew the names of the bands and major players as well as just enjoying the music.

Bill and I didn't always agree on everything, but we had an affinity for boxing. Sometimes on Saturday nights we would watch amateur boxing together. We would try and guess the weights and fighting classifications of the various boxers. Through talking to him about how the boxers would move and the way they approached their opponent, I discovered that he had boxed in high school. I also learned that he was on the Golf, Football, and Tennis teams as well. He was proud of the athlete he had been at one time, and a little pissed off that the aging process had impeded some of his movement. Well, he can go anywhere he wants now, and play any game he wishes with no pain or confusion. Happy boxing, Bill.

I remember how much Dad loved sailing. The first time I went sailing with him on one of his many sailboats we cracked a bottle of champagne for my maiden voyage. We left out of Muskegon and headed to the big lake. It was a windy day which meant the boat was almost on it's side most of the time. Not the best weather for a first timer like myself, but he loved the fact I was there and so did I!

Note from site admin, see album2 for sailing pics Colleen uploaded.
